Everyone Knows That God Exists—They Choose to Ignore Him

Have you ever noticed how aggressively some people fight against the idea of God? It’s not enough for them to simply say they don’t believe—many go out of their way to argue against His existence. They write books, give lectures, and mock those who have faith. But why? If God weren’t real, why would they spend so much energy trying to disprove Him? (That’s a great question!)

everyone knows that God exists

The truth is, they know. In fact, everyone knows that God exists!

Romans 1:19-20 makes it clear:

“Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

That last part is crucial: people are without excuse. The problem isn’t a lack of evidence. The problem is that people suppress the truth because they don’t want to acknowledge God’s authority over their lives. They want to live on their own terms, make their own rules, and serve their own desires.

God’s Existence is Evident in Creation

All around us, creation declares the existence of its Creator. The complexity of the human body, the vastness of the universe, the perfect balance of nature—none of it is random. It all points to an intelligent, powerful Designer.

everyone knows that God exists

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.” (Psalm 19:1-2)

Even those who claim to be atheists rely on the order and logic of God’s creation every single day. Scientists study the precise laws of physics, yet refuse to acknowledge the Lawgiver. They marvel at the intricacies of DNA, yet deny the One who wrote the code. They count on the predictability of gravity and time, yet claim the universe is nothing more than an accident.

But it’s not just about nature—it’s about the very fabric of human experience. Love, beauty, morality, and justice all point to something beyond ourselves. These things aren’t just chemical reactions in our brains. They are evidence that we were created in the image of God.

Even nonbelievers recognize this, whether they admit it or not. When an atheist grieves the loss of a loved one, when they call something evil, when they long for meaning in their life, they are testifying—often unknowingly—to the reality of God.

“Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.” (Acts 14:17)

God has left His fingerprints everywhere. The evidence is overwhelming. The only way to deny it is to actively suppress it.

Everyone Knows That God Exists – People Suppress the Truth About God

But why would anyone deny something so obvious? Why do people refuse to acknowledge the Creator when the truth is staring them in the face?

Romans 1:21-22 tells us:

“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools.”

This is the heart of the issue. It’s not that people don’t know God exists—it’s that they don’t want to submit to Him. They would rather pretend He isn’t there than admit they are accountable to Him.

This rejection isn’t passive—it’s active.

“But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.” (2 Peter 3:5)

They deliberately forget. That means they push the truth aside, choosing ignorance over reality. And why? Because the truth is inconvenient.

If God is real, then life isn’t about personal happiness and self-fulfillment. If God is real, then morality isn’t subjective. If God is real, then we are not the ultimate authority over our own lives.

And that is a truth many people refuse to accept.

The Conscience Bears Witness to God’s Law

God hasn’t just revealed Himself in nature—He has also written His law on every human heart.

“Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.” (Romans 2:14-15)

Every culture on earth recognizes basic moral truths. Murder is wrong. Stealing is wrong. Lying is wrong. People may disagree on specifics, but the foundation of morality is universal.

Why?

Because morality isn’t man-made. It comes from the moral Lawgiver.

God is the moral lawgiver

Even those who deny God still live as if right and wrong are real. They demand justice when they are wronged. They condemn evil when they see it. They expect honesty, fairness, and integrity from others.

But here’s the problem: if there is no God, then morality is just a social construct, a matter of personal opinion. Yet no one truly lives that way. The reason? Their conscience testifies to the reality of God, whether they acknowledge it or not.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.” (Job 12:7-10)

Even the animals understand what many people deny.

God Calls All to Repentance

People may ignore God now, but they won’t be able to ignore Him forever. Judgment is coming.

“In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

Many people live as if they will never have to answer for their actions. They convince themselves that death is the end, that there is no final reckoning.

But they are wrong.

The resurrection of Christ is proof that God will judge the world. No one will be able to stand before Him and claim ignorance. They knew. They had every opportunity to repent. They just refused.

“For this is what the Lord says—he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other.’” (Isaiah 45:18)

There is no other God. There is no other way.

The Choice is Clear

God has revealed Himself. The evidence is everywhere. The truth is plain.

The only question is: What will you do with it?

You can ignore God, suppress the truth, and live as if you are the center of the universe. Or you can humble yourself, acknowledge your Creator, and turn to Him in repentance.

There is no middle ground.

To ignore God is to reject Him.

If you have been running from Him, stop. He has made Himself known. He is calling you to turn from sin and trust in Him.

What will you do?
