Nothing New Under the Sun: The Truth About Unchanging Human Nature

We live in a world that worships the idea of progress. Every generation believes it is more enlightened, more advanced, and morally superior to the ones that came before. Society teaches us that new is always better—that we are evolving into something greater than our ancestors. But the Bible tells a different story.

The Illusion of Progress

Despite the rapid changes in technology, unchanging human nature remains just as it was thousands of years ago. We are still selfish, still prideful, still drawn toward sin, just as Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden. Nothing about the human heart has changed. As Ecclesiastes 1:9 says, “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.”

We may drive electric cars instead of chariots, communicate through smartphones instead of messengers, and conduct business over the internet instead of in the marketplace, but at our core, we are the same people who rebelled against God in the beginning. This article will explore how history proves that human nature is unchanging, why sin persists despite society’s progress, and why Christ remains the only true solution for real change.

The Myth of Human Advancement

Human history is a repeating cycle. Every civilization rises, believing it has discovered the key to peace and prosperity, only to fall under the weight of corruption, greed, and moral decay. From the pride of the Tower of Babel to the idolatry of ancient Rome to the materialism of modern culture, mankind has followed the same patterns over and over.

Why does this happen? Because unchanging human nature ensures that sin remains at the heart of every society. The names and faces change, but the desires remain the same.

  • The pursuit of power today is no different from the conquests of ancient empires.
  • The immorality celebrated in modern culture mirrors the decadence of Sodom and Gomorrah.
  • The rejection of God’s truth in favor of human wisdom echoes the arrogance of those who crucified Christ.

Romans 1:22-23 describes this perfectly: “Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”

Every generation believes it is smarter, but all it does is repeat the same mistakes in new ways.

Why Sin Persists Through the Ages

From the moment Adam and Eve took the fruit in the Garden of Eden, sin has ruled the human heart. Some argue that humanity is improving, that people today are kinder, more ethical, and more intelligent than those who came before. But what does Scripture say?

Genesis 3:6-7 shows us that sin is driven by the same desires today as it was then:

  • The Lust of the Flesh – Eve saw that the fruit was “good for food.” Today, people chase after pleasure, indulging in whatever makes them feel good without concern for consequences.
  • The Lust of the Eyes – The fruit was “pleasing to the eye.” Today, we are bombarded with materialism, status, and possessions, believing that more will satisfy us.
  • The Pride of Life – The fruit was “desirable for gaining wisdom.” Today, mankind is obsessed with knowledge, believing we can outthink or outgrow our need for God.

Sound familiar? That’s because sin has not evolved. Unchanging human nature means that what tempted Eve still tempts us today.

Jesus Himself warned that nothing would change. In Matthew 24:37-39, He said, “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.” In other words, people will continue living for themselves, unaware or indifferent to the judgment that is coming.

Technology Changes, But People Don’t

Some argue that technology has made us better people. We have instant access to knowledge, medical advancements, and greater conveniences than ever before. But has any of this changed unchanging human nature?

  • Social media has given people a platform, but it hasn’t eliminated pride, gossip, or deception.
  • Modern medicine has cured diseases, but it hasn’t cured hatred, greed, or violence.
  • Education has expanded, but moral decay continues at an alarming rate.
technology changes but people don't

The only real change is the tools we use to sin. Instead of carving idols from wood and stone, we worship celebrities, wealth, and social status. Instead of hiding our sins in darkness, we broadcast them for all to see. 2 Timothy 3:1-5 describes today’s world perfectly:

“People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good… lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God.”

Technology has changed how we sin, but it has not changed our sinful nature.

The Only True Change: Transformation in Christ

If progress won’t change human nature, what will? The Bible is clear: only Jesus Christ can truly transform the heart.

2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”

While the world tries to create new solutions—self-help, therapy, government programs—none of these address the root issue: sin. Only Jesus can do that. Throughout history, we see real transformation in the lives of those who put their faith in Him:

  • Paul (Saul) – From persecutor to preacher.
  • The Woman at the Well – From outcast to evangelist.
  • Zacchaeus – From corrupt tax collector to generous giver.

Jesus doesn’t offer temporary self-improvement. He offers new life.

The Unchanging Truth in a Changing World

unchanging human nature

In every generation, people claim to have found new ways to solve humanity’s problems. But sin is not a problem that can be fixed with politics, education, or innovation.

The world tells us that progress will make us better. But history tells us that unchanging human nature will always bring us back to the same sins. The only way to truly change is through the life-transforming power of Jesus Christ.

Romans 8:1-2 reminds us of our only hope: “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

So the question is: are you putting your hope in progress, or are you putting your hope in something other than unchanging human nature —the truth of Jesus Christ?
